Currently, there are several church ministries that the Savanna Council of the Knights of Columbus support.
Church grounds maintenance: Entails mowing, trimming and pruning of landscaping. Generally volunteers take one weekend every four weeks. Time invested is about 2 to
2 1/2 hours to complete. The Knights also help in maintaining Church buildings providing necessary care to keep them in good condition. This ministry is shared with the parish's Commission on Temporalities.
Annual Pancake Breakfast: St. John's Pancake Breakfast is a very popular annual event that is jointly sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Women and the parish Social Activities Committee. The proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast are split evenly between the Knights and Catholic Women and provide major support for both group's charitable endeavors. You can assist with this popular fund-raising event by serving food, busing tables, washing dishes, grilling sausage, cooking pancakes and an assortment of other helpful duties...4 hour shifts are offered.
Annual Tootsie Roll Drive: You have probably noticed the Knights at intersections every fall collecting money and offering Tootsie Rolls. This is actually the group's Intellectual Disability Drive which is a very worthwhile volunteer activity that raises money to help mentally challenged individuals live better lives. Over the years the Savanna Knights have donated more than $75,000 towards this worthy cause.
Annual Christmas Dinner: One of the Knight's newer ministries, the annual Christmas Dinner, is held on Christmas Day providing much needed fellowship and dinner to individuals and families in need of someone to share this blessed holiday with. Volunteers generally work two-hour shifts.
Movie Ministry: Once a month the Knights host a free Christian movie at the Savanna Times Theater, bringing people together to enjoy fellowship and entertainment. Volunteers typically arrive at 1:30 pm and leave just after the movie, greeting and thanking those who attend.
General Good Works: Each Knight regularly strives to do good works helping individuals, Church and community. The Knights of Columbus is a true order of Knights in the finest tradition of service, duty, patriotism and God.
